I don’t know quite what to think about a video that has gone viral of a Singapore Airlines flight attendant spoon-feeding a five year old boy as he watches his iPad.

As Boy Watches iPad, Singapore Airlines Flight Attendant Feeds Him Dinner

The video was posted by the boy’s father, proud as he could be that he had secured Singapore Airlines business class from Singapore to Tokyo for his family. He was amazed when he looked back and saw that his five-year old son was being spoon-fed his dinner by a Singapore Airlines cabin crew members, historically referred to as a Singapore Girl.

The video is quite cute, but the controversy, for me at least, is that the little guy is not even paying attention to this kind soul who is feeding him. Instead, he’s just transfixed on his iPad.

First, I’m surprised the kid let her feed him. My kids are fiercely independent when it comes to eating. Since age two my daughter has insisted on eating herself and does a remarkably good job, now at age three, eating with a fork and spoon (she has not mastered the knife yet). The same was true for my son, who is now seven and certainly was not being spoon-fed at age five.

Should the flight attendant have fed him? Well, I think it’s a beautiful gesture and one of the things that makes Singapore Airlines unique among its peers. I’ve got four Singapore Airlines premium cabin segments to share with you in an upcoming trip report and the service on Singapore is simply subliminal…it is one of my favorite ways to fly.

I’m not in the mood to attack today, so I will stop far short of condemning these parents…but I am curious your thoughts on this matter. We don’t have a TV in my house, but we do have an iPad that I will occasionally use to help the kids cultivate their German. However, we have a screen-free policy at the table. No cell phones or other electronic devices are allowed while we eat together.

On the other hand, I published my own family trip report earlier this year and you can bet that my son and daughter were glued to the monitor during their dinner. That’s just what you do on an airplane.

A NEW holiday destination is set to be on the cards for Brits thanks to a new flight route launching next year. Singapore Airlines has confirmed that the new route will operate from an airport in London.

According to Travel Gossip, the flag carrier is set to launch flights from London Gatwick to Singapore Changi International Airport from next year.

Five weekly flights will depart from London Gatwick at 10.15am, arriving in Singapore at 6.20am the following day, with a flight time of 13 hours.

The early arrival into Singapore will give passengers the ability to “seamlessly” transfer onto connecting flights to southeast Asia, Australia, and New Zealand, according to the airline.

Flights from London Gatwick to Singapore will depart from March 2024.

The new route will be operated by an Airbus A350-900, and it will feature three cabins, including Business Class, Premium Economy, and Economy.

Singapore Airline’s existing flights from London Heathrow and Manchester Airport will operate as normal.

Singapore Changi International Airport is the main entry point for holidaymakers entering the city-state.

The destination has yet to become as popular as other more well-known tourist spots in Southeast Asia like Indonesia, Thailand, and Vietnam.

But there are plenty of reasons to visit the city-state, including its Formula One street circuit, which is set to return in 2024.

In addition the the adrenaline-inducing race, there are other attractions, including a tour of the famous graffiti artwork by Singapore’s answer to Banksy, Yip Yew Chong.

The city-state also has some of the cheapest Michelin-starred meals on the planet, with a plate costing as little as £2 at Liao Fan Hawker Chan in the Chinatown Complex Marke.

There’s also the Gardens by the Bay, which is home to ever-changing displays at the Flower Dome — a towering indoor waterfall at The Cloud Forest — as well as the 160ft vertical gardens at Supertree Grove.

Earlier this year, Singapore Airlines was named the best airline in the world by Skytrax, a company that rates air transport.

Skytrax independently analysed the performance of 325 of the biggest airlines in the world from September 2022 until May 2023.

In the rankings, Singapore Airlines took the top spot, scoring highly for its first-class cabin.

Edward Plaisted of Skytrax said: “It is a fabulous achievement for Singapore Airlines to achieve this World’s Best Airline title for 2023.

“Singapore Airlines achieved excellent results in many of the award categories, with the highlight being recognition of their First Class cabin as the World’s Best First Class.”

Singapore Airlines isn’t the only airline opening new routes from the UK to holiday destinations across the globe.

British Airways will be resuming flights from London Stansted for the first time since the Covid-19 pandemic.

The flag carrier has confirmed that three new routes will depart from the London airport, with prices starting at £36 for a one-way ticket.

Budget airline Ryanair is launching flights to Spain, Portugal, and Malta, from Norwich Airport.

Air travel has long been considered one of the safest modes of transportation, with rigorous safety standards and protocols in place. However, for some individuals, the fear of flying can still be a significant obstacle. To alleviate these concerns, it’s crucial to choose airlines with impeccable safety records.

In 2023, several airlines around the world have emerged as the safest options for travelers. Let’s delve into the Top 20 safest airlines in the world, as ranked by Airline Rankings, and explore the criteria used to determine their safety.

What makes an airline safe?

Determining the safety of an airline involves a complex analysis of multiple factors. According to Geoffrey Thomas the editor-in-chief for Airline Rankings, their editors employ a comprehensive methodology. They analyze:

  • Crashes in the last 5 years: The number of crashes an airline has experienced over the past five years is a crucial indicator of its safety performance. Few or no crashes demonstrate a commitment to safety.
  • Serious incidents within a two-year period: While crashes are the most severe safety events, serious incidents like engine failures, emergency landings, or near-miss situations also play a role in assessing an airline’s safety.
  • Inspections conducted by aviation regulatory authorities: Regulatory agencies and industry associations conduct regular audits to assess an airline’s adherence to safety standards and procedures.
  • Fleet age: Older aircraft may have more wear and tear, increasing the risk of mechanical failures. A young fleet is often seen as a safety advantage.
  • Assessment of pilot training: Well-trained and experienced pilots are a cornerstone of flight safety. Airlines with rigorous pilot training programs score higher in safety assessments.
  • COVID protocols: In the post-pandemic world, airlines’ response to health and safety measures is also a significant consideration.
