A charter plane carrying 276 passengers, mostly Indians, grounded in France for four days over suspected human trafficking, landed in Mumbai in the wee hours on Tuesday. The aircraft, an Airbus A340, landed in Mumbai shortly after 4 am, the official said. It had taken off from Vatry airport near Paris around 2.30 pm local time.

According to French authorities, the plane had 276 passengers on board when it took off for Mumbai, as 25 persons, including two minors, had expressed the wish to apply for asylum and were still on French soil.

Two others were held and produced before a judge, who were brought before a judge, were released and placed on assisted witness status, a French news channel said. When the flight landed in Vatry airport, there were 11 unaccompanied minors among the 303 Indian passengers on board, a local official had said.

Makeshift beds were arranged for the stranded passengers, who were given access to toilets and showers and provided meals and hot drinks in the hall of Vatry airport, the official had said.

The flight, which was operated by Romanian charter company Legend Airlines and bound for Nicaragua, had landed at Vatry on Thursday for a technical stopover en route from Dubai when French police intervened.

French authorities launched a judicial investigation into the conditions and purpose of the trip, with a unit specialising in organised crime investigating suspected human trafficking.

Record number of Indians seek asylum

Nicaragua has become a popular destination for those seeking asylum in the US. As many as 96,917 Indians attempted to enter the US illegally in the financial year 2023, signalling a 51.61 per cent jump from the previous year, according to data made available by the US Customs and Border Patrol (CBP).

At least 41,770 of those Indians attempted to enter the US via the Mexican land border, CBP data shows. Flights to Nicaragua or third countries where obtaining travel documents is easy have come to be known as ‘dunki’ flights.

More than 700 staff who attended the dinner event showed “clinical signs of vomiting or diarrhoea”, the Agence Régionale de Santé (ARS) health agency said.

According to The Guardian, the menu included foie gras, scallops, lobster and tournedos, followed by ice-cream logs and hazelnut and chocolate mousse at just £13 a head.

Airbus said only “around 100” were taken ill at the meal in western France last week.

The firm said it is co-operating with the ARS, according to the BBC, “to identify the cause of the illness and ensure this cannot happen again in the future”.

An investigation has been launched to find the source of the mass food poisoning.

Airbus is the largest aircraft maker in the world, and Airbus Atlantic is a subsidiary of the company.

Across five countries there are 15,000 people employed by the cooperation.

The Airbus group hires 134,000 people and offers products and services in the aircraft, helicopter, defence, space and security industries.

Earlier this year, outbreaks of Salmonella Senftenberg in France and Europe were thought to have been caused by “cherry-like tomatoes”.

An ECDPC spokesperson said: “The outbreak strain was detected in a mixed salad dish containing cherry tomatoes among green leaf vegetables prepared on August 17, 2022, in France.

CNN — French authorities have grounded a passenger plane carrying 303 Indian citizens, including 11 non-accompanied minors, at the airport of Vatry, on suspicion of human trafficking, the Paris Prosecutor’s Office told CNN on Saturday.

The plane, belonging to Legend Airlines, a company based in Romania, was on its way from the United Arab Emirates to Nicaragua and had stopped over at Vatry airport, roughly 150 kilometers east of Paris, for supply, according to the Prosecutor’s Office.

French authorities seized the plane on December 21 after receiving an anonymous tip.

The plane was chartered by a company registered outside of the European Union and Legend Airlines didn’t participate in the ticket selling for this flight, the airline’s lawyer Liliana Bakayoko told CNN affiliate BFMTV on Saturday.

“The cabin crew have all been questioned and have been let go freely,” Bakayoko said, adding that the company which chartered this plane had been a loyal client of Legend Airlines and had chartered several flights before.

Legend Airlines has refused to identify the company citing ongoing investigations.

Under French law, organized human trafficking is punishable with prison terms of up to 20 years and fines of up to $3.3 million (3 million euros).

The minors on the plane have since been transferred to appropriate government agencies for care.

All adult passengers have been questioned by French authorities.

“Two of the passengers are being questioned in police custody to ascertain whether their role in the transport may have been different from that of the others, also under what conditions and for what purpose,” the Paris Prosecutor’s Office said.

The custody of two people was extended for another 48 hours on Saturday, prosecutors said. France’s National Jurisdiction against Organized Crime (JUNALCO), a sub-branch of the Paris Prosecutor’s Office, is overseeing the investigation.
