Lufthansa has upped its business-class ante by unveiling giant new throne-like seats that will be available to passengers in the business cabin of the Boeing 777-9, coming into service in 2020.
The airline is planning to accommodate 45 to 60 business-class passengers on the fleet of 34 new planes but will forgo a first-class cabin, according to Bloomberg.
The new business-class seats feature beds up to 2.2 metres (7 feet) long. Every seat also has direct aisle access, a special shoulder zone for side sleepers, and larger monitors, according to the carrier.
The backrest is designed for passengers’ shoulders to sink into the seat when they lie on their side, so their back remains straight.
Passengers can pick either the extra-long beds or a seat with twice the workspace.
The new Boeing 777-9 offers a wider cabin than previous models, the airline said. Lufthansa is using the extra space to improve its business-class offering and give passengers direct access to the aisle from all seats, arranged in a 1-1-1 or 1-2-1 configuration — an option for people travelling in pairs.

The airline said that in spring 2018 it would also offer business-class passengers mattresses, sleep sweaters — currently available only to those in first class — and duvets on all long-haul intercontinental flights.
